Well here we are on May 25. The seniors have graduated (the only men’s basketball player wearing a robe at graduation was Dikembe Mutombo) and Greg Monroe has sat for his final class/exam as not a millionaire. All the basketball guys seem to have enjoyed the last days of school, walking around as much as possible with super soakers and getting accosted by at least 3,000 girls with cameras who then tagged them in Facebook albums with titles like “Georgetown Day Part [Insert the number 2 in a different language here]” or “Wait…is this real life??”

But the offseason is firmly upon us, the Kenner League will kick off soon enough, and Wright, Freeman, and crew are busy in the gym and in the weight room getting ready for November. The Hoyas will be deeper than they have been in recent years, and it’s never too early to take a look at what John Thompson III will have to work with:

Chris Wright

Chris Wright – There were rumors that Wright might test the NBA draft waters, then people got confused because of the other Chris Wright at Dayton, and finally CBS mistakenly put Georgetown’s Wright on the early-entry list on its website. At any rate, he’ll be back at the point for Thompson in the fall, and in many ways, the Hoyas’ season will go as he goes. As we’ve seen over his career, if Wright plays well, Georgetown usually plays well, and much more often than not, the Hoyas win.  Just as with the entire team, Wright needs to get a grasp on the elusive concept of consistency, and if that can happen, it could be a special season for him.

Austin Freeman - With a full offseason to adjust his lifestyle to having diabetes, Freeman should be in the conversation for Big East player of the year. Watching the Hoyas’ comeback against UConn courtside, there was a moment in the second half when something seemed to click for the senior. He was primarily a shooter his freshman year, took a step back across the board his sophomore year, and he had not yet emerged as a star during the early parts of his third season. But his all-around game exploded just when Georgetown needed someone to step forward, and he didn’t look back until he began to struggle in the postseason. With Monroe gone, Freeman, along with Wright, will be the primary focus of opposing defenses game in and game out for the first time.
