Erick Fernandez

Erick Fernandez

Georgetown junior catcher Erick Fernandez — 24th-round pick Tim Adleman’s battery mate — was the Washington Nationals’ 46th-round pick on Day 3 of the 2010 MLB draft. Fernandez was a major contributor during his three years playing for Manager Pete Wilk and his career batting average is well north of .300. He played some shortstop early in his college career, but he settled in behind the plate and proved himself to be a two-way talent. As a junior, Fernandez hit .317 with five homers and 29 RBIs, and as a freshman, he was second on the team in RBIs with 35.

It is always difficult to tell whether most MLB draft picks will make it to the big leagues, and that is especially the case the later the 50-round draft progresses. But one thing is for sure for both Fernandez and Adleman (both of whom were selected by D.C.’s two local teams) — they will at least have a shot to get to the Show.
